A new law firm website has two jobs. It must help the right person understand whether the firm may fit, and it must begin a controlled client path the firm can actually continue.
That is different from a digital brochure. A polished site can still create operational friction if every visitor reaches the same generic form, receives the same confirmation, and forces the attorney to reconstruct the problem in the first call.
Design the site as the first part of the practice:
Useful answer → relevant intake → conflict and fit review → consultation preparation → engagement → matter record
Lead with the client's immediate question
The visitor is rarely looking for “full-service representation.” The visitor is trying to understand a notice, deadline, document problem, claim, filing decision, family transition, injury, estate responsibility, or benefit denial.
Create pages that answer:
- What the event may mean
- Which dates or documents may matter
- Which facts change the next step
- Where the answer varies by jurisdiction
- What the person can prepare
- When attorney review may be useful
Use the client's words at the boundary. The internal matter system can convert those words into the firm's precise practice taxonomy after the visitor enters intake.
Make the next action specific
“Contact us” asks the visitor to invent the next step. A stronger action names it:
- Check whether this notice fits the firm's review
- Prepare for a bankruptcy consultation
- Organize the facts for an estate-administration call
- See which injury records the firm will ask about
- Request a review of the denied benefit timeline
The action should match what the firm is prepared to do. Do not promise an immediate legal answer if the actual next step is conflict review and consultation scheduling.
Use guided intake without interrogating the visitor
The first intake should collect enough to route and prepare, not every fact the representation may eventually require.
Useful opening fields often include:
- Identity and contact information
- Adverse or related parties needed for initial conflict review
- Matter type and location
- A short description in the visitor's own words
- Critical known dates
- Current stage or notice type
- How the person found the firm
- Communication preferences and accessibility needs
Practice-specific branching can ask a few decisive questions while hiding irrelevant fields. A person with an RFE should not navigate the same form as someone checking visa eligibility. A probate fiduciary should not receive the same intake as an estate-planning client.
Put privacy beside the action
Do not make the visitor find a footer policy to understand the form.
Near the intake, state plainly:
- What information the firm is asking for
- Why it is needed
- Whether submission creates an attorney-client relationship
- Whether the person should avoid sending sensitive documents before the firm requests them
- How the information is routed or reviewed
- Where the full privacy terms are available
The exact language should be reviewed for the firm's jurisdiction, intake process, vendors, and representation model.
Design the confirmation page as a working step
A useful confirmation page should tell the person:
- The submission was received.
- What the firm will review.
- When the person can expect a response.
- What to do about an urgent deadline.
- Whether to book or wait.
- Which documents or information to prepare.
- What not to send yet.
This reduces anxious status calls and helps the consultation begin with better information.
Carry the intake into the firm
The website creates value when the resulting record continues into operations.
The attorney or reviewer should be able to see:
- The exact page or campaign that produced the inquiry
- The visitor's source answers
- Possible parties for conflict review
- Missing fields or contradictions
- The consultation status
- Every follow-up and response
- The reason for decline, referral, loss, or engagement
- The same facts in the opened matter without retyping
That continuity makes client acquisition measurable. The firm can distinguish traffic from qualified inquiries, consultations, signed matters, and collected value.
Let the website teach the first operating habit
If the client begins with a clear roadmap, precise document requests, and a reliable place to see the next step, the firm does not have to retrain the client later.
After engagement, the public path should hand off to:
- A client-visible matter roadmap
- The exact first document request
- A secure upload path
- Consultation or kickoff preparation
- Payment instructions
- A clear communication channel
When an upload is wrong, the system should identify the correctable problem and state the exact replacement needed. The attorney should receive the exception only when judgment is required.
Test the whole path on a phone
Before launch, run at least these scenarios:
- A high-fit inquiry
- A matter the firm does not handle
- A potential conflict
- An urgent date
- No consultation availability
- An incomplete form
- A duplicate submission
- A user who needs a different communication method
- A poor connection or small screen
Check the confirmation, notifications, record creation, follow-up, and analytics. A form that visually submits but does not create the correct internal record is not a functioning intake path.
Measure the handoffs
Track:
- Useful-page visits
- Intake starts and completions
- Qualified inquiry rate
- Time to conflict and fit decision
- Consultation booking and appearance
- Engagement and initial payment
- Stalled inquiry recovery
- Top exclusion reasons
- Matter value connected to the original source
The goal is not the highest possible form-completion rate. It is a clear path that helps suitable clients move and helps the firm make responsible decisions quickly.
Keep a prelaunch path worksheet
For each priority page, record the intended reader, immediate question, next action, intake branch, confirmation, conflict and fit owner, response expectation, consultation path, decline or referral path, and internal record created. Run the worksheet on desktop and phone with a high-fit inquiry, a poor-fit inquiry, an urgent date, and an incomplete submission. Do not launch a traffic campaign until each scenario reaches the intended firm record and staff notification.
DocketBuddy Sites connect useful pages, guided intake, client roadmaps, and inquiry analytics to the DocketBuddy matter record. The New Solo program includes the website launch as part of the larger opening system, so the client path and practice operations are configured together.
